World No Tobacco Day is celebrated on 31 May
Every year, on 31 May, World Health Organization and partners mark World No Tobacco Day (WNTD).  

The theme of World No Tobacco Day 2018 is "Tobacco and heart disease."

The day highlights the health and other risks associated with tobacco use, and advocating for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption.

Patanjali Launches New Messaging App 'Kimbho'

Yoga guru Baba Ramdev's Patanjali launched a new swadeshi messaging application called 'Kimbho' to compete with WhatsApp.  

Kimbho caters to private and group chats with free phone and video calling.

The tagline of Kimbho is "Ab Bharat Bolega".

Patanjali has recently tied up with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) to enter the telecom sector by launching Swadeshi Samriddhi SIM cards.

Akshay Kumar Launches Twin Pit Toilet Technology Campaign

Film actor Akshay Kumar launched the twin pit toilet technology campaign in New Delhi.

The actor appealed everybody to spread the awareness on the issue and make the cleanliness drive more effective. 

The twin pit toilet technology is an Indian invention that collects defecation for a period of five years and then it turns into a valuable organic compost.

4th International Yoga Day Celebrations To Be Held At Dehradun

The main event of 4th International Yoga Day celebrations will be held at Dehradun in Uttrakhand on 21st of June.

Secretary AYUSH Ministry Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha announced that Dehradun has been selected as the venue for Mass Yoga Demonstration of International Yoga Day.

Mr. Kotecha is in Dehradun to initiate the preparations regarding this mega event.

Cochin International Airport, Worlds 1st Fully Solar Energy-Powered Airport: UNEP

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) recognized Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) in Kerala as the world’s first fully solar energy-powered airport. CIAL is India’s first airport to be constructed in public-private-partnership (PPP) model in 1999.

It is the busiest and largest airport in the state of Kerala.

The airport has 15 MWp solar power plant near the cargo complex of airport comprising 46,150 solar panels laid across 45 acres.

Gaj Yatra launched in Garo Hills of Meghalaya

Gaj Yatra Gaj Yatra is an 18-month-long national campaign aimed to protect elephants, India’s national heritage animal in 12 elephant range states.

It was organized by the Wildlife Trust of India in collaboration with the State Forest Department.

Under this campaign, an elephant mascot will be there.

It was launched to the acknowledged good gesture of villagers from Garo Hills who had set aside part of their community-owned land to create village researchers.

Gujarat Government Launches Reuse Of Treated Waste Water Policy

The Gujarat government unveiled its 'Reuse of Treated Waste Water Policy' which aims to reduce the state's dependence on freshwater sources like the Narmada river.

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel launched the policy at a function held in Gandhinagar.

The policy will promote the use of treated wastewater and will see the setting up of sewage treatment plants (STP) in all major towns and cities of Gujarat.

R K Agrawal appointed as President of National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet appointed former Supreme court Judge R K Agarwal as National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission ( NCDRC) from February 2014 to May 2018 

He will succeed Justice D K Jain, who completed his term. Justice Agrawal was the judge of Supreme Court from February 2014 to May 2018.

It was established in 1988 and it is headquartered in New Delhi.

Microsoft is third most Valuable Firm Globally

Software giant Microsoft surpassed Google’s parent company Alphabet in market capitalization for the first time in three years.

Microsoft becomes the third most valuable firm globally after Apple and Amazon.

Microsoft had a market cap of $753 billion at the close of trading, almost $14 billion ahead of Alphabet.

While Apple leads with a market cap of nearly $924 billion, Amazon is at a distant second, with nearly $783 billion.

Sangeeta Bahl Becomes Oldest Indian Woman To Scale Mount Everest

Sangeeta Bahl, a 53-year-old former model become the oldest Indian woman to conquer Mount Everest.

Bahl, who currently resides in Gurugram, scaled the peak with the help of two Sherpas and was felicitated at the Indian embassy in Kathmandu.

She already conquered six out of the seven highest peaks in the world.

Vikas Gowda, India's Only Discus Throw Gold Medallist At Commonwealth, Retires

Top Indian discus thrower Vikas Gowda retired after competing at the highest level for more than 15 years, during which he became the first and only Indian male to win Commonwealth Games medal in the discipline.

He has not taken part in any major international event since winning a bronze in the Asian Championships in 2017 in Bhubaneswar.

His retirement was announced by the Athletics Federation of India.

Gowda holds the national record of 66.28m (achieved in 2012).

India Launches Its 2nd IT Corridor In China

India launched its second IT corridor in China to cash in on the burgeoning Chinese software market.

The National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) established one more Sino-Indian Digital Collaborative Opportunities Plaza (SIDCUP) platform in China.

Agreements worth about six million US Dollars were signed between Indian service providers and Chinese customers at the launch of the corridor by China’s Guiyang Municipal government and the NASSCOM.

In December 2017, the NASSCOM established its first SIDCUP platform in the Chinese port city of Dalian, which is India’s first IT hub in China.

Pakistan Names Former Chief Justice As Caretaker PM

Former Pakistan Chief Justice Nasirul Mulk appointed as the interim Prime Minister of the country until the general elections are held on July 25. 

The decision comes ahead of the dissolution of the current government and parliament.

Hamburg To Host 2018 Global Wind Summit

The first edition of the Global Wind Summit will be held in Hamburg, Germany in September 2018.

The four-day event will see speakers from about 100 countries, including India, China, the US, Spain, and Denmark.

The conference on wind is the largest and most important meeting of the wind industry worldwide.

The event combines two conferences, WindEnergy Hamburg and WindEurope.

Colombia To Be NATO's 1st Latin American Gobal Partner

Colombia would be formally joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). 

The announcement was made by the Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos.

With the move, Colombia will become the first Latin American nation to be a part of the alliance.

It would be joining the bloc as a ‘global partner’, which means it will not necessarily have to take part in any joint military action and will be fully accredited in Brussels.

Paraguay Got Its First Woman Interim President

Paraguay gets a first interim woman President Alicia Pucheta for the first time in its history after outgoing leader Horacio Cartes stepped down ahead of schedule.

Vice President Alicia Pucheta will complete Carter's mandate after he resigned to become a senator.

Paraguay has just eight women among its 45 senators, and 11 among the 80 members of the lower house. Paraguay remains 135th out of 180 countries on the 2017 corruption index of Transparency International.
