JEE Main, NEET to be held twice a year from 2019

HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar announced that the national-level Engineering Entrance Test (JEE Main) and medical entrance examinations (NEET) will be held twice a year from 2019.

National Testing Agency will conduct these exams in online mode.

Students will have the choice to attempt both or one, the best score will be taken into account while giving admission.

First meeting of e-commerce Task Force held in New Delhi

The first meeting of the Task Force on e-commerce was held in New Delhi. Rita Teaotia, Commerce Secretary, chaired the meeting. The meeting deliberated upon the suggestions emerging from the sub-group meetings held in June 2018.

The suggestions were on wide-ranging issues such as cross-border data flows, taxation, trade facilitation and logistics, consumer confidence, IPR and future tech, FDI and competition issues.

The first meeting of the Think Tank, on the framework for national policy on e-commerce, held in April 2018 under the chairmanship of Suresh Prabhu, Minister of Commerce & Industry and Civil Aviation.

Narendra Modi to inaugurate the 'Statue of Unity' on 31st October

The Statue of Unity, being built near the Sardar Sarovar dam on the Narmada river, at a cost of Rs 2,989, in memory of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

On 31st October, the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the "Statue of Unity", the tallest statue in the world.

Memorials, museums and research centres were built where the statue is installed.

The Statue of Unity is being built with 5,700 Metric tonne structural steel, 68,000 Metric tonne of concrete and 1,900 MT of bronze.

CBIC launched GST 'Verify App'

Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has launched a mobile app 'GST Verify' developed by B Raghu Kiran, joint commissioner GST Hyderabad.

It is an android app to verify if the person collecting GST from the consumer is eligible to collect it or not.

BSNL unveiled internet telephony service 'Wings'

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) will roll out its new internet telephony service with brand name "Wings" from August 1.

Those subscribing to "Wings", entailing one-time registration fee of Rs 1,099, will be able to make calls using any internet connection including broadband, WiFi, 3G or 4G data network of any operator, thus overcoming connectivity problems even in areas having patchy signals.

Those subscribers can avail free domestic calls for one year, while the overseas calls will be priced as per international tariffs of BSNL landline.

Manoj Kumar Pingua is appointed as MD of NFDC

Manoj Kumar Pingua, a joint secretary of Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is appointed as the acting Manager of National Film Development Corporation (NFDC).

The previous Managing Director of NFDC is Nina Lath Gupta.

Mark Zuckerberg becomes the 3rd richest person in the world

According to Bloomberg, Facebook's 34-year-old CEO Mark Zuckerberg became the World's third-richest person with $81.6 billion wealth.

Amazon's Jeff Bezos remains the world's richest, while Microsoft's Bill Gates second-richest.

Previously, the world's third-richest person was Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett.

It's the first time that the three wealthiest people on the ranking made their fortunes from technology.

HDFC Bank most valuable bank in the emerging market outside China

There are four lenders from India that now rank among the world's 500 most valuable companies. HDFC Bank is followed by its housing finance cousin Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC), Kotak Mahindra Bank and State Bank of India.

♦ There are now 11 Indian companies among the world's 500 biggest firms in terms of market cap. Tata Consultancy Services (TCStops the chart with a market cap of $103 billion, followed by Reliance Industries.

♦ HDFC Bank has gone past Russia's Sberbank to become the most valuable bank in the emerging market outside China. HDFC Bank’s current market capitalisation is $78.4 billion against Sberbank's $74.4 billion.

♦ Industrial & Commercial Bank of China topping the list with a market cap of $273.4 billion, followed by China Construction Bank ($225.1 billion).

Reliance Industries becomes India's largest taxpayer in the private sector

Mukesh Ambani led Reliance Industries limited (RIL) is India's largest payer of Goods and Services Tax (GST), Excise and Customs Duty, and Income Tax in the private sector.

RIL's consolidated net profit for the fourth-quarter (January-March) of fiscal 2017-18 stood at Rs. 9,435 crore, up by 17.3 per cent on a year-on-year basis.

Bajrang Punia won gold medal at Tbilisi Grand Prix, Deepak won bronze

Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia won the gold medal at Tbilisi Grand Prix in Georgia with a 9-3 win over Iran’s Mehran Akbar Nasiriafrachali in the 65kg category final.

Deepak Punia won the bronze medal in the 86kg category by defeating Turkey’s Osman Gocen 5-3.

Dipa Karmakar becomes first Indian to win gold at Gymnastics World Cup

Dipa Karmakar, one of India's leading gymnasts, scripted history on July 8, 2018 by becoming the first Indian gymnast to win a gold medal in the vault event of the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup at Mersin, Turkey.


The win comes as Karmakar returned to action after a long layoff of almost two years due to a knee injury. The 24-year-old, who hails from Tripura, scored 14.150 to clinch the gold.

Key Highlights

 This is Dipa's first medal in a World Challenge Cup. She had topped the qualification also with a score of 13.400. 

 In her first attempt, Dipa had a difficulty score of 5.400 while collecting 8.700 in execution for a total of 14.100. She improved the score in her second attempt to 14.200 (5.600+8.600), giving her a total average of 14.150.

• The contestants who came second and third included Rifda Irfanaluthfi of Indonesia who clinched the silver with 13.400 points and Goksu Uctas Sanli from Turkey, who took the bronze with a score of 13.200.

 Dipa had also qualified in the balance beam finals by finishing third in the qualification with a score of 11.850. However, she ended up finishing fourth in the event.

 She was accompanied at the event by her coach, Bisheshwar Nandi.
